Storz & Bickel Mighty Review – Still Mighty Powerful?

Four years after it originally launched in 2014, we take another look at the beloved Mighty, and how it stacks up in 2018. Using a hybrid heating system, durable design and medical certifications, the Mighty has become a crowd favorite amongst the vaporizer community for good reasons.

Though it completely dominated the portable dry herb vaporizer market back then, new competition has arisen, challenging the powerful Mighty. Check out what we have to say in our 2018 model year Mighty.

Performance 9/10

The Mighty has marked its spot in vape history with performance that has developed an almost cult-like reputation. To many people, myself included, the Mighty has become a benchmark for comparisons in terms of performance.

By using a mix of convection and conductive heating, the Mighty gets up to temperature in around 90-120 seconds, based off which temperature setting you choose. By today’s standards, that’s far below the average of around 30 seconds, though I personally don’t mind it very much.

Unlike the Crafty, the Mighty has an on-board display and temperature controls, allowing you to tailor your experience on the fly. Being able to vaporize at temperatures from 104-410°F, or 40-210°C, you’re able to adjust your specific heat setting in 1 degree increments. This is a healthy range to choose from, especially if you like to vaporizer other herbs like peppermint or lavender

The flavor you get from the Mighty is definitely top notch! The first four hits being the best, with it tapering off with each subsequent draw.

Unfortunately the upper heat settings aren’t quite hot enough to efficiently use concentrates; however it still works well in a pinch. I’d still rather use a dedicated wax pen vaporizer for use with waxes and resins though.

The flavor you get from the Mighty is definitely top notch! The first four hits being the best, with it tapering off with each subsequent draw. Though the mouthpiece and cooling unit are made of a durable plastic, it doesn’t influence the flavor in the slightest. I do prefer using an aftermarket glass mouthpiece though, as I find it improves the feel of it substantially.

With a water pipe adapter (WPA), the Mighty can milk practically any glass pieces with ease, letting you get knockout sized hits with ease. Definitely a worthy investment if you already have a bubbler.

Cloud production is definitely up there with the best of the best, and overall the Mighty performs incredibly well!  There’s no doubt in my mind it earns a healthy 9/10, losing a point only for the slow heat up time.

Quality 9/10

Storz and Bickel are renowned for their excellent build quality and reliability. The Mighty is no exception, backed with a reputation for being built like a tank and withstanding much abuse. Though some may be deterred by the plastic construction, S&B made sure to use a highly heat resistant polycarbonate material that’ll stand the test of time.

Backed by a solid warranty and top notch customer service, you can rest easy knowing that if you do encounter a problem, you’ll be sorted out handily.

In fact, the Mighty is one of very few vaporizers with health & safety certifications. If you’re concerned about chemical off-gassing or other health related issues, the Mighty may be the best portable choice around.

Backed by a solid warranty and top notch customer service, you can rest easy knowing that if you do encounter a problem, you’ll be sorted out handily. To add to that, Storz and Bickel throws in a solid accessories kit as well, including; a charger, replacement o-rings, spare screens, concentrates pad, grinder & filling tool, dosing capsule, cleaning brush and user manual.

They use quality materials across the board and there’s no doubt in my mind that Storz & Bickel are one of the most reputable manufacturers around. The Mighty only loses one point on the quality index, as I still do prefer a metal construction over plastic.

Ease of use 10/10

Being one of the simplest vaporizers to use, the Mighty knocks it out of the park in this regard. Load your material, turn it on, set your temperature, wait, and then inhale. That’s all there really is to it. There’s no intricate draw technique required, and you’ll still get great results a light or heavy pull.

With the addition of loading capsules, filling up a new chamber takes seconds. For medical users with limited fine motor functions, there is a 40-capsule loading tray that makes preparing your daily medicine a breeze.

There’s no doubt in my mind the Mighty earns a perfect score in this category.

With a complete beginner who has never used a vaporizer before, you’ll be able to get solid results with practically no coaching at all. It works great for small group sessions, though the chamber may be a bit too small for gatherings with more than four people.

There’s no doubt in my mind the Mighty earns a perfect score in this category. The simplicity and results just make using it such a pleasant experience rather than a chore.

Design – 7/10

Though it’s quite durable, I’m still not so fond of the plastic construction, and it makes the unit feel ‘cheaper’ than it should. I would’ve maybe liked to see an aluminum or titanium build with maybe a rubberized coating instead.

I don’t dislike the design by any means, but it’s certainly not the greatest, and earns a 7/10 instead.

The visual side of it isn’t anything spectacular either, looking more like something you’d find in a toolbox at a construction site. This isn’t a bad thing by any means, and I like the ‘industrial’ aesthetic of it anyways.

As you can imagine, it’s quite large, around the size of a plus-sized phone but triple the width. Sure, it’ll fit in your pockets, but it won’t be so comfortable. It stows away better in large jacket pockets or a bag instead.

Another aspect where the Mighty drops a few points is in the battery department. With the 20% capacity improvement for the 2018 models, the Mighty hits around 90 minutes of on time per charge, which is pretty fantastic! There’s one downside to it though.

It’s not removable. When the battery inevitably starts dying, your battery life will suffer, heat up times may slow down, and there won’t be any easy way to replace it. In 2014 this wasn’t uncommon, but things have changed in nearly half a decade, and the removable 18650 has become the king.

Though there is pass-through charging, the proprietary charger is something I’d like to see changed. If you accidentally misplace or break it, you’ll have to end ordering another one.

Perhaps if a Mighty 2.0 comes out, S&B might address the size and aesthetics of the device, potentially appealing to a larger market. I don’t dislike the design by any means, but it’s certainly not the greatest, and earns a 7/10 instead.

Maintenance – 7/10

Cleaning the Mighty is a bit more involved than some vaporizers like an Arizer Solo, though it’s not too terrible.

There are a lot of small nooks and crannies that take a while to thoroughly clean up, and you’ll spend around a half hour in total getting everything spotless again.

For the most part you can get away with cleaning the chamber occasionally. After around 6-10 sessions, it’s good to take a cotton swab soaked in some isopropyl alcohol, gently scrubbing away any residue and accumulation. It’s a good idea to avoid putting any alcohol on the o-rings, as it’ll slowly break them down.

The mouthpiece is a bit harder to clean. As it’s mostly plastic with plenty of silicone seals, you can’t just dunk it into a glass full of iso and let it sit overnight. There are a lot of small nooks and crannies that take a while to thoroughly clean up, and you’ll spend around a half hour in total getting everything spotless again. With fantastic vapor quality comes an intricate cooling system, and an intricate cooling system requires some deeper cleaning than usual. It’s a small price to pay though!

Value – 9/10

The Mighty comes in at a pretty heavy price point, but it’s certainly worth it. For such a dependable powerhouse that’ll just give you session after session of quality vapor, you really can’t go wrong. Certainly, there are plenty of cheaper units that’ll perform real well, but the Mighty is a tough one to beat, and well worth every penny.

Final rating: 51/60 – 85%

There are few units on sale today that can even compare to the Mighty. Definitely, there’s some stiff competition out there now that rivals some of the features it has, but as a complete package, the Mighty takes home a solid victory for me.

For a device that has such a strong reputation in the community, it’s no doubt that it’s well deserved. If you’re on the fence about buying one – go for it. You really cannot go wrong at all, and you’ll love every minute with it!
